Teammates For Kids and Garth Brooks, partnered to hold youth sports camps at every city on his 3-year World Tour. Brooks and Teammate athletes in each city volunteered their time to coach kids in football, basketball, baseball, hockey, and soccer. Chicago was the first city to host a Teammates ProCamp on September 6, 2014, this basketball camp featured Kansas University men’s basketball coach, Bill Self. The final camp was held in Nashville, Tennessee on December 9, 2017 with a hockey camp hosted by former NHL goalie Chris Mason. Mason, who played for the Nashville Predators, Florida Panthers, St. Louis Blues, and Atlanta Thrashers, has been a proud Teammate since 2008. All of the young athletes participated in the camps at no charge.
Garth visited the camps to run relays with the kids and talk to them about life lessons they’ll learn from playing sports. “They’re teaching you words like courage, discipline and respect,” he said, referring to the coaches. “I’m going to throw one more on you and this is the big one. It’s love. It’s not about your girlfriend or your boyfriend, it’s about loving one another, loving your teammates. You see those coaches back there? They’re going to tell you things you remember for the rest of your life.”
Teammates also presented the Good Teammate Award at each of the camps. The award recognized the young athlete who best demonstrated the traits of a Total Teammate, including leadership, toughness, unselfishness, and respect for the game and all of its participants.
