Wives of the Arizona Diamondbacks hosted a baseball-themed birthday party with a carnival atmosphere for patients and families in the Phoenix Zone. The ladies first decorated the entire Zone with baseball and Diamondbacks goodies. Then, they ran several carnival games and a face painting station, and the kids were treated to a magic show and a special appearance by the Diamondbacks’ mascot, Baxter the Bobcat. Of course, what’s a birthday party without cake, ice cream, and goody bags? Inside these goody bags were a Diamondbacks Build-a-Bear and a Paul Goldschmidt Bleacher Creature plush toy.
“Birthdays are a big deal for kids, and while they are in the hospital they often are missing their friends’, family, and sometimes their own birthday parties,” said Julie Schwarz, Zone Program Coordinator. “So, the monthly Zone birthdays are especially important to help our patients feel normal and provide a fun distraction from their hospital stay, which ultimately helps in the healing process. This is the second year the Diamondback wives have hosted one of our birthday parties, and they once again hit it out of the park! We are so fortunate to have community partners like them to support our Zone programming and provide such meaningful and enjoyable events for our patients and families. They are a truly wonderful group of ladies.”
What is the Child Life Zone?
Since 2001, the Child Life Zone Network, created by Teammates for Kids, has grown to 11 hospitals throughout the United States. A Child Life Zone is a state-of-the-art, therapeutic play area inside a hospital where pediatric patients and their families can play, learn, laugh, and relax. Each zone is staffed by child life specialists, certified professionals who help children and their families cope with difficult medical challenges through play, education, and self-expression. Teammates for Kids believes that some of the best medicine doesn’t necessarily come from a bottle--it comes from allowing KIDS to be KIDS!
