While in Eugene for a Stadium Concert at the University of Oregon’s Autzen Stadium, Garth Brooks and Teammates For Kids hosted their first track and field Sports Camp at South Eugene High School. In addition to learning many of the disciplines of the sport including: sprints, relays, shot put, high jump, long jump and the javelin, the one-hundred athletes also worked with their coaches on better understanding the importance of attitude, character, courage, discipline and respect.
The young athletes participated in the camp at no charge. Participants were elementary and middle school students representing Boys & Girls Club Emerald, Co-Op Family Center, Kidsports, Military Gold Star Parents, YMCA Eugene, NAACP Eugene/Springfield, Oregon Community Programs, Elrod Center, A Family for Every Child and Williamalane Parks & Recreation.
Teammates For Kids presents the Good Teammate Award at each youth sports camp they sponsor. The award recognizes the young athletes who best demonstrate the traits of a Total Teammate, including leadership, toughness, unselfishness, and respect for the game and all of its participants. In Eugene, Good Teammate Awards were presented to: Chloe Krouse, age 9; and Beth Hsu, age 10.
Teammates will continue to partner with Brooks to hold youth Sports Camps at every city on his Stadium Tour. Athletes in each city will volunteer their time to coach kids in football, basketball, baseball, hockey, soccer, lacrosse and now track & field.
