Garth Brooks was the Grand Marshal for the Zone Opening Parade at the Child Life Zone at Phoenix Children’s Hospital on November 9, 2012. With hundreds of patients, families and staff lining the hallways, Garth led a group of very special children into their new home away from home. The Zone is 3,800 square feet of fun for kids, including the Garth Brooks Stage, a performance space for patients and visiting celebrities; a multi-use theater for films and other performances; a kitchen and dining area, in which patients can prepare food; a Teen Space, including games and computers to encourage peer interaction; a family resource library; and a quiet area for healing services including yoga, meditation, and massage. Like the other zones, this space will give kids a chance to do what they do best--be kids!
After the parade, Teresa Boeger, the Director of Child and Family Services, spoke about the importance of the Zone to the kids and also the Child Life Department inside the hospital. The Child Life Staff will now be able to direct kids to a place inside the hospital that will bring them joy and hopefully make their stay at the hospital a shorter and more enjoyable experience. The Zone officially was dedicated with a confetti pop that surprised all the guests in the room!
