The Zone at Denver Health
The Child Life Zone at Denver Health is a 2-story facility that opened in 2010, marking the first time a Zone project helped initiate a Child Life program in the hospital. As the Rocky Mountain region’s first—and only—Child Life Zone, it provides experience and guidance in establishing the department at Denver Health. The state-of-the-art, therapeutic play area is designed to help soothe the fears and anxieties of hospitalized children and their families, while providing them with information about their condition and treatment.
My name is Erika Croswhite, and I am the Child Life Supervisor at the Denver Health Child Life Zone. I have been a Child Life Specialist since 1999, and I earned my Master’s Degree in Education Psychology in 2003.
At Denver Health, we have four Child Life Specialists and one Recreational Therapist who serve our pediatric population. The Child Life program has been here for 2 ½ years. We provide services to the children in the pediatric unit, the PICU, the NICU, the OR, the ER, and at an offsite clinic called the Family Crisis Center. Our Zone is the core of our Family Centered Care practice. We host community events to promote safety and education, we provide bi-monthly meals for our ICU families, and we have daily activities for patients, families, friends, and visitors. In 2011, we provided services to approximately 7000 children and their families!
